Retatrutide is an investigational synthetic peptide that acts as an agonist at three distinct G protein-coupled receptors. It combines activity at the glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor, the glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide receptor, and the glucagon receptor within a single molecule. This multi-receptor profile distinguishes it from earlier incretin-based compounds that engage one or two of these pathways. Researchers designed the molecule to test whether simultaneous activation produces greater metabolic effects than single or dual agonism alone.
The peptide backbone is chemically modified to resist rapid enzymatic breakdown in the body. A fatty acid side chain promotes binding to serum albumin, which slows renal clearance and supports an extended circulation time. These modifications allow less frequent administration than would be possible with an unmodified peptide. The precise contribution of glucagon receptor activation to the overall metabolic effect remains an area of active investigation, because glucagon raises glucose while also increasing energy expenditure.
Research-grade peptide material is commonly supplied as a lyophilized powder, a form that limits degradation during transport and storage. Standard practice keeps such material cold and protected from light and moisture, with tighter conditions used for long-term archives. Once dissolved, solutions are generally considered less stable than the dry powder and are handled on shorter timescales. These established conventions derive largely from general peptide chemistry rather than from compound-specific evidence alone.
Identification and purity assessment typically rely on reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography, often paired with mass spectrometry. Mass measurement confirms the expected molecular mass and can reveal truncations or modifications. Peptide mapping and sequencing techniques provide sequence-level confirmation when needed. Because related peptide impurities can behave similarly in a single method, orthogonal techniques are usually combined. Reported purity values depend heavily on the method used and should be interpreted with that in mind.
Dissolution behavior depends on the amino acid sequence, the counterion content, and the buffer chosen. Many peptides disperse readily in water or mild aqueous buffers, while others require a small amount of organic co-solvent or a change in pH. Adsorption to plastic and glass surfaces can reduce the concentration of a solution over time, particularly at low concentrations. Filtration before analysis removes particulates, and aliquoting limits repeated freeze-thaw cycles that stress the material.

== 90Sr contamination in the environment == 90Sr is not quite as likely as 137Cs to be released as a part of a nuclear reactor accident because it is much less volatile, but is probably the most dangerous component of the radioactive fallout from a nuclear weapon. A study of hundreds of thousands of deciduous teeth, collected by Dr.Louise Reiss and her colleagues as part of the Baby Tooth Survey, found a large increase in 90Sr levels through the 1950s and early 1960s. The study's final results showed that children born in St. Louis, Missouri, in 1963 had levels of 90Sr in their deciduous teeth that was 50 times higher than that found in children born in 1950, before the advent of large-scale atomic testing. Reviewers of the study predicted that the fallout would cause increased incidence of disease in those who absorbed 90Sr into their bones. However, no follow up studies of the subjects have been performed, so the claim is untested. An article with the study's initial findings was circulated to U.S. President John F. Kennedy in 1961, and helped convince him to sign the Partial Nuclear Test Ban Treaty with the United Kingdom and Soviet Union, ending the above-ground nuclear weapons testing that placed the greatest amounts of nuclear fallout into the atmosphere. The Chernobyl disaster released roughly 10 PBq, or about 5% of the core inventory, of 90Sr into the environment. The Kyshtym disaster released 90Sr and other radioactive material into the environment. It is estimated to have released 20 MCi (800 PBq) of radioactivity.
== Applications == Synthetic biology initiatives frequently aim to redesign organisms so that they can create a material, such as a drug or fuel, or acquire a new function, such as the ability to sense something in the environment. Examples of what researchers are creating using synthetic biology include:
Auxotrophy (Ancient Greek: αὐξάνω "to increase"; τροφή "nourishment") is the inability of an organism to synthesize a particular organic compound required for its growth (as defined by IUPAC). An auxotroph is an organism that displays this characteristic; auxotrophic is the corresponding adjective. Auxotrophy is the opposite of prototrophy, which is characterized by the ability to synthesize all the compounds needed for growth. Prototrophic cells are self-sufficient producers of all required metabolites (e.g. amino acids, lipids, cofactors), while auxotrophs require to be on medium with the metabolite that they cannot produce. For example, a methionine auxotrophic cell could only grow on a medium that contained methionine; otherwise, it would starve. In this example, this is because it is unable to produce its own methionine. However, a methionine prototrophic cell would be able to function and replicate on a medium with or without methionine. Replica plating is a technique that transfers colonies from one plate to another in the same spot as the last plate so the different media plates can be compared side by side. It is used to compare the growth of the same colonies on different plates of media to determine which environments the bacterial colony can or cannot grow in (this gives insight to possible auxotrophic characteristics). The method of replica plating implemented by Joshua Lederberg and Esther Lederberg included auxotrophs that were temperature-sensitive; that is, their ability to synthesize was temperature-dependent.

A group or series of case reports involving patients who were given similar treatment. Reports of case series usually contain detailed information about the individual patients. This includes demographic information (for example, age, gender, ethnic origin) and information on diagnosis, treatment, response to treatment, and follow-up after treatment. (NCI) Case-control study
==== pVI ==== pVI has been widely used for the display of cDNA libraries. The display of cDNA libraries via phage display is an attractive alternative to the yeast-2-hybrid method for the discovery of interacting proteins and peptides due to its high throughput capability. pVI has been used preferentially to pVIII and pIII for the expression of cDNA libraries because one can add the protein of interest to the C-terminus of pVI without greatly affecting pVI's role in phage assembly. This means that the stop codon in the cDNA is no longer an issue. However, phage display of cDNA is always limited by the inability of most prokaryotes in producing post-translational modifications present in eukaryotic cells or by the misfolding of multi-domain proteins. While pVI has been useful for the analysis of cDNA libraries, pIII and pVIII remain the most utilized coat proteins for phage display.
ångström (Å) A non-SI, metric unit of length equal to 10−10 metre, i.e. 1⁄10000000000 of a metre or 0.1 nanometre. The angstrom is commonly used in the natural sciences to express microscopic or atomic-scale distances, including the sizes of atomic nuclei, wavelengths of electromagnetic radiation, and lengths of chemical bonds (e.g. the covalent radius of a chlorine atom averages about 1 angstrom).

Cold fusion researchers (McKubre since 1994, ENEA in 2011) have speculated that a cell that is loaded with a deuterium/palladium ratio lower than 100% (or 1:1) will not produce excess heat. Since most of the negative replications from 1989 to 1990 did not report their ratios, this has been proposed as an explanation for failed reproducibility. This loading ratio is hard to obtain, and some batches of palladium never reach it because the pressure causes cracks in the palladium, allowing the deuterium to escape. Fleischmann and Pons never disclosed the deuterium/palladium ratio achieved in their cells; as of 2002 there were no longer any batches of the palladium used by Fleischmann and Pons because the supplier changed the manufacturing process, and researchers still had problems finding batches of palladium that achieved heat production reliably.
=== Singapore === The Singapore Armed Forces issues three types of combat rations – Type M (Muslim), Type N (Non-Muslim), and Type V (Vegetarian). Each type comes in 4 or 5 different menus, packed in a heavy-duty green plastic bag similar to an American MRE bag, but measuring 205 mm x 190 mm x 115 mm (8" x 7.5" x 4.5") and weighing 1.5 kg (3.3 lb). Most items are retort-pouched (in the form of a watery paste and eaten straight from the pouch) and (except for the hot beverages) can be eaten without further preparation. The ration provides three meals and a variety of between-meal snacks, averaging 3,350 kcal (14,000 kJ) per day. Each ration bag includes 2 retort-pouched main courses, a dessert, and an accessory pack containing 2 fruit bars, 4 packages of cookies, an envelope of isotonic drink mix powder, an envelope of instant flavored tea mix, a hot beverage (coffee, cocoa, or tea), an envelope of cereal mix, candy, matches, fuel tablets, and tissue paper. A package of instant noodles is provided with every meal pack, but is issued separately. Typical Type M (Menu #1): Rendang Mutton with rice; Tandoori Chicken with rice; Red Bean dessert. Typical Type N (Menu #5): Pasta Bolognese; Yellow Rice with Chicken; Barley Dessert with milk. Typical Type V (Menu #1): Mock Chicken Curry with rice; Vegetarian Fried Noodle; Green Bean dessert with coconut milk.
It suggests that this level is mostly fixed by factors that are hereditary or determined early in life, implying that any change to well-being is only temporary and will eventually revert to the individual's baseline.
In medicine, collateralization, also vessel collateralization and blood vessel collateralization, is the growth of a blood vessel or several blood vessels that serve the same end organ or vascular bed as another blood vessel that cannot adequately supply that end organ or vascular bed sufficiently. Coronary collateralization is considered a normal response to hypoxia and may be induced, under some circumstances, by exercise. It is considered to be protective. Collateral or anastomotic blood vessels also exist even when blood supply is adequate to an area, and these blood vessels are often taken advantage of in surgery. Some notable areas where this occurs include the abdomen, rectum, knee, shoulder, and head.

Retatrutide is an investigational synthetic peptide that activates three metabolic receptors: GLP-1, GIP, and glucagon. It is being studied for obesity and type 2 diabetes. It has not been approved for clinical use.
Earlier incretin therapies engage one or two receptors. Retatrutide adds glucagon receptor activity, which may raise energy expenditure. Whether this produces larger clinical benefits is still being tested.
It has completed phase 2 trials and moved into later-stage evaluation. No regulator has granted approval. Access outside research settings is not authorized.
Mass spectrometry provides a mass value that can be compared with the expected value, while peptide mapping examines fragmentation patterns. Together these techniques support identity claims better than a single measurement can.
